Every large city has a big park featuring a giant pond where people relax by
feeding the aquatic birds, or by sailing their radio-controlled boats. It's
up to me, acting on behalf of cyberpunks, to use technology to combine these
two concepts.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Radio Controlled Duck.
Take a high-quality hunting decoy. A decoy so good that it generally comes
back full of buckshot because it fools hunters, too. Add a little electric
motor, a propeller and rudder, and borrow the radio-control gear from a
model airplane. Then add a little something extra which we'll discuss in a
moment.
Picture a Saturday morning, mid-July. People are sitting around the huge
pond, watching the model sailboats. Strangely enough, there's this rather
ratty looking duck out in the middle that seems to chase any sailboats that
get too close to it. Some kind of territorial instinct, or just bad
attitude?
An experienced sailer sends his elegant three-master over to the duck. Duck
chases sailboat. The pilot is madly twiddling his radio control knobs,
trying to stay away from the bird, which seems to be trying to ram it.
Strange animal.
The duck slows down a little and the pilot of the sailboat figures that
maybe the duck is merely curious, so he lets the duck get closer. It nudges
up alongside his beautiful sailboat.
And explodes.
